When should I schedule my baby’s first newborn care appointment?

Newborn care can start the minute your baby arrives — so it’s a good idea to call Northern Pediatrics a few weeks (or more) before your due date to set up your child’s first appointment. This eliminates any rush to find proper care after birth because that time is already busy enough!

While you’ll see your OB/GYN again after your baby’s birth, their focus is on your recovery after childbirth. Your baby also needs their own doctor to look after their needs, and that’s where Northern Pediatrics comes in. Ideally, you’ll visit the office for the first time when your baby is 3-5 days old.

What does newborn care include?

Newborn care at Northern Pediatrics covers everything your baby needs. Your provider performs a gentle exam, including a head check, reflex test, hip check, and other important aspects of newborn health monitoring.

In addition, newborn care includes many other facets that help both you and your baby. Examples include:

  • Routine vaccines
  • Nutrition management
  • Umbilical cord care
  • Bathing and hygiene care guidance
  • Safe sleeping guidance

Newborn care is customizable based on your baby’s needs. Your appointments are a good opportunity to ask questions about baby care, developmental milestones, safety practices, and other questions you may have as a new parent.

How often does my child need newborn care?

Northern Pediatrics will recommend a specific newborn care schedule based on your baby’s needs. In general, the schedule of well checkups throughout the newborn stage and early childhood includes:

  • First visit at 3-5 days old
  • 1-2 weeks
  • 1 month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 24 months
  • 30 months

After 30 months, your child’s next routine visit usually occurs when they turn 3. After that, your child normally has a well checkup once a year until they turn 21. Of course, if your child gets sick or has particular needs, like sports clearance exams or mental health treatment, you can schedule that care whenever needed.

Northern Pediatrics is here for you and your baby from the moment they’re born. Schedule your child’s first newborn visit online or call the office to speak with a friendly provider now.
