What is a sick visit?
A sick visit is medical care when your child is ill or experiencing a new concern. Because these types of issues often arise suddenly, Northern Pediatrics offers sick visits on an urgent care basis, so your child can see a medical provider the same day you call.
When does my child need a sick visit?
Many situations may make it necessary for your child to see a medical provider promptly, including:
Many other health needs can fit into the sick visit category as well. Whether it’s a mental health concern or a physical problem, Northern Pediatrics offers sick visits to help.
How do sick visits work?
During a sick visit, your child’s Northern Pediatrics provider performs a physical exam and reviews all of their symptoms. They perform routine checks of your child’s breathing, temperature, and heartbeat as well.
Depending on their symptoms, your child may need testing like a throat or nasal swab or blood work. In some cases, for example with acute injuries, your child will likely need imaging tests like X-rays.
After diagnosing the issue, your child’s provider can prescribe treatment immediately. Your child may need injections, breathing treatments, wound care, or some other type of treatment in the office. They may also need to take prescription or over-the-counter medication at home over the coming days.
In the unusual event that your child has a complex issue that Northern Pediatrics can’t diagnose or treat on-site, your child’s provider accesses the referral network to recommend a specialist who’s uniquely qualified to address their issue.
What happens following sick visits?
After sick visits, you follow a treatment plan for several days or weeks, based on medical recommendations. In many cases, your child’s Northern Pediatrics provider recommends a follow-up visit to check on their recovery within a week or two of the sick visit.
With regular well checkups and scheduled vaccines, you can potentially reduce the risk of many childhood illnesses and have fewer sick visits.
