When does my child need vaccines?

Your child receives their first vaccinations at the time of birth. After that, they’ll need vaccinations at several points throughout their childhood. In addition, all people including young children need yearly flu vaccinations.

Some children don’t have their vaccinations at the traditional times, so they may need catch-up vaccinations to establish optimal disease protection. Northern Pediatrics can work with your family to help your child get caught up, no matter what their current vaccination status is.

Further, if your family plans to travel outside the United States, your child may need specific vaccinations based on the places you plan to visit.

What vaccines will my child need?

Children need a broad range of vaccines to prevent serious diseases. These include:

  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis (DTaP)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
  • Pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13)
  • Inactivated poliovirus (IPV)
  • Influenza
  • Varicella (VAR)
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Rotavirus (RV)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Meningococcal ACYW (MCV)
  • COVID-19

Your child’s specific vaccination schedule may vary based on their health conditions, geographic location, infection risk, and other factors.

How can I prepare my child for vaccines?

Vaccinations are a routine part of childhood, so it’s important to start off on the right path by making them as uneventful and stress-free as possible for your child.

There are a few things you can do to make the vaccination process easier for your child, including:

  • Talking about the upcoming appointment
  • Telling them in simple language why they need the vaccination
  • Giving them options (sitting on your lap or not, watching the “poke” or not, and so forth)
  • Bringing a comfort object like a soft toy or favorite book for distraction
  • Planning a fun activity for after the vaccination

By planning ahead, you can help your child to accept their vaccinations as a normal part of their well visits in the future.

Vaccines can protect your child’s health now and as they grow into a happy and healthy adult. Northern Pediatrics is here to demystify the vaccination process and make it easy to protect your child.
